Mig 21 Vs F16 Figher Jet

The Mikoyan-Gurevich also known as MiG-21 is a supersonic fighter jet and interceptor, designed by the Mikoyan-Gurevich Design Bureau of the Soviet Union. The aircraft is widely used by Indian Air force (IAF).

Mig 21 is a single engine, single seater multi role aircraft with a top speed of 2229 km/h. It can carry a 23 barrel twin canon with 4 R-60 close combat missiles.

On the other hand  F-16 aircraft is a single-engine supersonic multirole fighter aircraft developed by General Dynamics for the United States Air Force. 

F16 comes with both single and double  seat option and has a top speed of 2414 km/h.

The MiG-21 Bison is mostly used by IAF with a long fuselage and delta wings. The aircraft is 14.7 metre long and has a wingspan of 7.1 metre. Mig 21 is light weight with a dry weight of 5846 kg and maximum takeoff weight of 9800 kg.

The MiG-21 is powered by a Tumansky R-25-300 after burning turbojet with a dry thrust of 40.21 kilo-newton and thrust with afterburner thrust of 69.62 kilo-newton.

The Mig 21 Bison can carry rockets, air-to-air missiles, air-to-surface missiles and bombs with a combat radius of 370 km.


F16 can carry M-61A1 20mm cannon and its external stations can carry up to six air-to-air missiles, conventional air-to-air and air-to-surface munitions and electronic countermeasure pods .

F16  can pull 9-g manoeuvres, powered by general electric F110 GE-129 engine with a dry thrust of 76.3 kilo-newton and peak thrust of 127 kilo-newton. 

F16 has a combat radius of 547 km and one of the most modern air craft and can dliver its weapons with superior accuracy, defend itself against enemy jets, and return to its starting point.

An all-weather capability allows F16 to accurately deliver during non-visual bombing condition due to its advanced radar system.

Mig 21 VS F16, Which One Will Win?

With normal scenario, two equally skilled pilots most probably F16 will win, Because F16 has a batter radar system and a combat range of 547 km compared to 370 km of Mig 21.

F16 has more speed, accuracy and better build than those Mig 21.

But, in case of a better skilled pilot in Mig 21 can easily defeat a mediocre pilot in F16 as you all know famous saying by George S. Patton:

“Wars may be fought with weapons, but they are won by men. It is the spirit of men who follow and of the man who leads that gains the victory.”

A war is fought more in the mind than the body. The person who controls matters more than the equipment.
