15 Largest States of India By Geographical Area

India, the 7th biggest country by its area and one of the most populated country. There are 28 states in India and some of them are small and some are huge. 

So for general information, we are listing Top 15 Largest States In India by geographical area and basic geographical details about them.

1. Rajasthan (Area~342,239 km2)

Rajasthan is the largest state of India by geographical area. Rajasthan covers an area of 342,239 square kilometres, that is 10.4 percent of the total area of India. It is also the seventh largest state by population of India.

The state is located on the northwestern side of India, with Thar Desert (Great Indian Desert). Rajasthan  also share boarder with Pakistan, also shared boarder with India states like Punjab, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Gujurat.

2. Madhya Pradesh (Area~308,245 km2)

Madhya Pradesh is one of the largest states of India by geographical area. It is the second largest state of India with an area of 308,245 square Kilometre . The state share borders with Uttar Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra, Gujarat, and Rajasthan.

Before 2000, Chhattisgarh was a part of Madhya Pradesh and it was the largest state in India and the distance between the two furthest points Singoli and Konta, was 1500 km.

3. Maharashtra (Area~307,713 km2)

Maharashtra is a western state India occupying a significant portion of Deccan Plateau. It is the third-largest state with an area of 307,713 square kilometre .The state is bordered with Arabian Sea to the west, and the Indian states like Karnataka, Goa, Telangana, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh. 

The state also shared boarder with Indian union territory of Dadra and Nagar Haveli to the north west. Maharashtra is also the richest state of India by GDP.

4. Uttar Pradesh (Area~243,943 km2)

Uttar Pradesh is one of the biggest states present in northern part of India. The State has almost 200 million population, and was created on 1st April 1937 and renamed Uttar Pradesh in 1950. The state has 75 districts with the capital named Lucknow.

The two biggest rivers of India, the Ganga and Yamuna, join at Prayagraj and then flow as the Ganga further east. Hindi and Urdu are the two official languages in Uttar pradesh.

5. Gujarat (Area~196,024 km2)

Gujarat is one of the states on the western coast of India with a coastal spread of 1,600 km and has a population of 60 million. It is the 5th largest state of India by area. Gujarat is bordered with Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh and Pakistan.

Gandhinagar is the capital of Gujarat and its largest city is Ahmedabad. The official language is Gujarati and it is olso one of the richest states in India. With an area of 196,024 square Kilometre Gujarat is one of the largest states of India by geographical area.

6. Karnataka (Area~191,791 km2)

Karnataka is a south Indian state of India and one of the biggest IT and agricultural hub In India. The state was formed on 1 November 1956. The largest city and capital is Bangalore. 

Karnataka shared boarder with Arabian Sea to the west, Goa, Maharashtra, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, and Kerala. Karnataka is one of the biggest states of India with an area of 191,791 square Kilometre.

7. Andhra Pradesh (Area~162,970 km2)

Andhra Pradesh is one of the biggest states of India present in south eastern side of India. The state covers an area of 162,975 sq. km. The largest city of the state is Visakhapatnam and Telugu is the official language.

Andhra Pradesh shared boarder with Odisha, Telengana, Karnataka, Tamilnadu and bay of Bengal. Andhra pradesh once was the third largest state of India, but due to division it is the 7th largest state of India. 

8. Odisha (Area~155,707 km2)

Odisha is an Indian state situated at the eastern coast of India. The state neighbors West Bengal, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh and Andhra Pradesh . The state has a coastline of 485 kilometres along Bay of Bengal sea.

With an area of 155,707 square kilometre, it is the 8th largest state by area and one of the largest states in India. Odisha is popular because of its ancient culture and friendly people.

9. Chhattisgarh (Area~135,191 km2)

Chhattisgarh is one of the 28 states of India, located in the central-east of India. It is one among the largest states in India, with an area of 135,192 square kilometre.

Chhattisgarh is a resource-rich state, leading producer of electricity and steel in the country, accounting for 15% of the total steel produced as well as one of the large contributor of coal across the country.

10. Tamilnadu (Area~130,058 km2)

Tamil Nadu is one of the southern coastal states of India. Its capital and largest city is Chennai. The state is bounded by the Eastern Ghats on the north, by the Nilgiri Mountains, the Meghamalai Hills, and Kerala on the west, by the Bay of Bengal in the east, Indian Ocean on the south.

With an area of nearly 130,058 square kilometres Tamilnadu is one of the largest states of India.

11. Telangana (Area~112,077 km2)

Telangana is one of the state in south India, situated on the high Deccan Plateau. It is the eleventh largest state of India with an area of 112,077 square kilometre.

On 2 June 2014, the state was separated from the state of Andhra Pradesh, India as the newly formed 29th state with Hyderabad as its permanent capital.

12. Bihar (Area~94,163 km2)

Bihar is a state in eastern side of India and its subcontinent. Bihar is the twelfth-largest by territory, with an area of 94,163 sq km.. The state is siding with Uttar Pradesh to its west, Nepal to its north, West Bengal to the east, and Jharkhand to the southern side.

The Bihar plain is conjured by the river Ganges (One of the biggest rivers in India), which flows from west to east. Bihar is one of the biggest states of India by geographical area.

13. West Bengal (Area~88,752 km2)

West Bengal is a state in the eastern side of India and coastal area covered by Bay of Bengal. With over 91 million inhabitants (as of 2011), West Bengal is one of the largest states of India and the thirteenth-largest Indian state, with an area of 88,752 square kilometre.

West Bengal shared border with Bangladesh to the east, and Nepal and Bhutan to the north and other Indian states includes  Odisha, Jharkhand, Bihar, Sikkim, and Assam. Kolkata is its capital and largest city.

14. Arunachal Pradesh (Area~83,743 km2)

Arunachal Pradesh is one of the north eastern state of India. It also borders the states of Assam and Nagaland its south. The state boarders with China, Bhutan and Nepal. Itanagar is the state’s capital and the largest city.

A major part of the state is disputed and cliamed by both China and Taiwan. It is one of the largest states of India by geographical area with an area of 83743 square kilometre. 

15. Jharkhand (Area~79,714 km2)

Jharkhand is one of the biggest states of India by geographical area. The state shares its border with Bihar to the north, Uttar Pradesh to the northwest, Chhattisgarh to the west, Odisha to the south and West Bengal to its east.

It has an area of 79,710 square kilometre. Jharkhand is the 15th largest state by area, and 14th largest by population. Hindi is the official language of the state. Ranchi is the capital city of jharkhand.
